Canadian Language Benchmarks: CLB 5 Initial
The Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) is Canada’s national standard for describing and measuring adult English as a Second Language (ESL) ability, used for immigration, citizenship, education, and employment, outlining 12 levels of proficiency from basic to advanced based on what learners can do in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, rather than just grammar or vocabulary.

- Reading: Read a moderately complex online job posting to identify key requirements.
- Writing: Write a formal cover letter and tailor a resumé to the posting.
- Listening/Speaking: Participate in a mock job interview, listening to and responding to questions about education, experience, and availability, and asking relevant questions of one’s own.
- Workplace Planning Task (L/S/R):
- Listening: Listen to a voicemail from a supervisor detailing key instructions for a simple workplace event.

- Reading: Read a short informational article online or a report on a relevant topic.
- Writing: Write a one-page summary and response, using notes taken from the reading, ensuring appropriate language and format.
